FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Three Meredith student-athletes earned a USA South weekly honor as announced Monday from the conference office. Junior tennis standout Puja Patel was selected as the womens tennis Player of the Week, while Katie Burnet and Courtney Saunders garnered Rookie of the Week honors in women's lacrosse and softball, respectively.
Patel posted a 3-0 record at no. 1 singles and a 2-1 record at no. 1 doubles since the spring season opened February 6. In singles play Patel collected wins over NCAA Division II Barton and Pfeiffer. She swept the competition from Barton and battled to win in a tiebreaker versus the Falcons. Most recently, Patel defeated her competition in Sunday's match with the visiting Sweet Briar Vixens. She and Caroline Hunt teamed up to defeat Barton and SBC in doubles.
In women's lacrosse Burnet tallied five goals and one assist as the Avenging Angels posted a 1-1 record during their first-ever competition in the sport versus a pair of USA South foes. In a 16-5 loss to the Piedmont Lions, Burnet scored a pair of unassisted goals, won four draw controls and picked up five groundballs. As the Avenging Angels made school history with an 8-7 win over LaGrange, Burnet posted a hat trick, dished out one assist and caused two turnovers to go along with five groundballs and one draw control.
When she finally reached the field Sunday after a rainy Saturday forced cancellation of day-one of Meredith's Triangle Classic, Saunders helped the Avenging Angels post a 2-0 record on the week from centerfield. She went three-for-four (.750) at the plate with two runs scored, two RBI, one double, one walk and one stolen base. Saunders opened the day hitting a perfect two-for-two in the 9-0 win over Wilson and finished with a single in the 1-0 battle over the McDaniel Green Terror.
