Softball and Tennis Head to USA South Spring Championships
Raleigh, N.C. – The spring sports teams finished their best regular seasons ever as members of the USA South Athletic Conference. The two teams move to Burlington, N.C. on Friday to compete for the conference tournament championships and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Meredith tennis team finished in a three-way tie of first place in the USA South and first regular season championship. Sophomore Puja Patel earned USA South Women's Tennis Player of the Year Honors and a spot on the first team. Freshman Caroline Hunt was placed on the second team while sophomore Mary Lawrence Newton made the second team. (More Award Info) With an 8-1 conference record, they drew the #1 seed in the conference tournament and face Peace College in Burlington on Friday.
The Meredith softball team completed their best season in the USA South in a three-way tie for second place and a 12-6 conference record. It was also a banner year in the end of season awards for the team as Kim Scavone took home Coach of the Year accolades and first team members shortstop Alex Warren and second baseman Amanda White. Other honorees were second team outfielder Emily Cook, third teamer Jessica Dzeskewicz and honorable mention member catcher Lorri Cole and pitcher Amanda Beirne. (More Award Info) With the #2 seed, the Avenging Angels await the winner of #7 Averett vs. #10 Mary Baldwin on Friday April 13 at 1 p.m. in Burlington.
