RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith College will serve as host to the inaugural Sir Walter Miler on Friday, August 1, at 9 p.m. Twenty elite runners will convene under the lights at Meredith's premiere track venue to attempt to break the sub-four-minute mile, or sub-four-and-one-half-minute for women, barrier.
Just prior to the "Women's Sub-4.5 Challenge," Meredith Athletic Director Jackie Myers will make an exciting announcement you will not want to miss.
Event organizers Pat Price, along with Sandy Roberts and brother Logan, ramped up this year's event after the success of last August's "Sandman Mile" held at a local high school track. Simply by word of mouth, more than 400 fans joined to watch Sandy Roberts, a former NC High School State Champion and NCAA All-American, nearly break into the elite club of sub-four mile runners.
Building on last year's excitement, Price and the Roberts team created the Sir Walter Miler. With the addition of a women's1600 meter race and "Raleigh's Finest" Mile celebrity run, the Sir Walter Miler is sure to outpace last year's moment.
With local sponsors, a pre-race party, and a trail run at Umstead Park Saturday morning, the Sir Walter Miler is sure to entertain. Link HERE for event details, elite competitors, and pre- and post-race fun.
The event team's history shows a deep rooted connection to both Meredith College and the State of North Carolina. In addition to Sandy Robert's high school and collegiate success at Raleigh's Broughton High and nearby N.C. State University, Logan currently volunteers as an assistant coach at UNC-Chapel Hill. Price ran at a private high school in Charlotte, and his fiancé and mother both graduated from Meredith.
