Avenging Angels Kick Off with Responsibility

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College athletics department teamed up with the student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) to host the Meredith Student-Athlete Kick Off Monday, October 8. This marked the second such occasion celebrated by the Avenging Angels to highlight the four components of the College's athletics program mission statement: integrity, discipline, respect, responsibility.

As part of an ongoing initiative to promote the program's developmental goals, the department hosts a special event to demonstrate its commitment to student-athlete success, both on and off the playing field. The department will focus on one of the four principles each year across a four-year period beginning in 2011 with integrity. Tonight's event featured responsibility.

Meredith athletics staff members launched the program with a brief statement about each of the four topics selected by SAAC to emphasize responsibility. SAAC targeted health and wellness, social media, academics, and leadership to spotlight opportunities for student-athletes to demonstrate "responsibility: a trust, obligation, or duty; ability to meet obligations; trustworthiness," as defined in the Meredith College Student-Athlete Handbook.

Student-athletes then divided into four groups to dialog about the core value as it relates to the specific topics. Each group incorporated team members from the seven sports sponsored by the College, and also included athletes from a variety of class years and participation levels.

The event culminated with ice cream and tee shirts for everyone.
