RALEIGH, N.C. - USA South Athletic Conference Commissioner Rita Wiggs was on hand Wednesday, October 10, to present Meredith College with the "Pennies for a Purpose" championship plaque. Student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) President Sara Cranford, Vice President Caroline Cobb and Meredith Athletics Director Jackie Meyers accepted the award prior to Wednesday night's volleyball match.
The conference SAAC established the "Pennies" program in 2008 as a student-athlete-driven community service effort to support worthy organizations and charities. Each spring, SAAC's from every member institution collect loose change to donate to a group of their choosing. The friendly competition between schools helps drive the student-athlete efforts.
During last spring's campaign, the league collected over $1600 to be donated to Special Olympics as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association SAAC initiative. The Avenging Angels led this outstanding effort by collecting $412 and was named the 2012 "Pennies for a Purpose" champion.
"To see how proud the girls were that they had raised so much money for a wonderful cause was the absolute best part, because that's what its all about!" said an enthusiastic Cranford.
