FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Meredith College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) collected 338 cans of non-perishable food this fall as part of the USA South's "Cans Across the Conference" competition. The group will donate the food to Meredith's "The Daisy Trade Too," a campus service group supporting Meredith students and families in need.
In 2004 the USA South Athletic Conference SAAC implemented "Cans Across the Conference," a service initiative to give back to the community and perhaps improve the holidays for those less fortunate. In the spirit of good sportsmanship, the competition among the 13-member institutions helps drive the food collections on campus. Once collected, the non-perishable food will be delivered to the local organization chosen by each committee.
Overall, league member SAACs collected 29,233 items this fall. Over the nine-year history of the program, USA South Conference institutions have donated 259,185 items to various organizations. With a grand total of 9,220 items, Christopher Newport University is the "Cans Across the Conference" Champion for 2012 for the fourth consecutive year. Ferrum College collected 5,339 items to finish second while Greensboro College's 3,874 items rounded out the top-three.
