Softball Swept By Anderson (SC)

Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith softball team opened their season on Sunday against Division II Anderson (SC) on Sunday.  The Avenging Angels were swept by the Trojans on a very cold afternoon 11-4 and 15-6.  

Game One: Anderson 11, Meredith 4 - The Avenging Angels (0-2) took the early 1-0 lead in the second inning as Emily Cooke's single to center field scored Sara Cranford.  The Trojans (6-2) would add one in the third and two in the fourth to take take the 3-1 lead.  Meredith would score three more in the bottom of the fourth.  Scoring was highlighted by RBI walks by Carrie Webster and Ashley Green and Cooke scoring on a passed ball.  Meredith gave up a lot of scoring opportunities as they stranded 11 runners in the first four innings.  Amanda White had a double and a triple while Green had a double.

Game Two: Anderson 15, Meredith 6 (5 innings) - Anderson opened the first inning with 10 runs and took the commanding 10-0 lead.  Meredith's offense was highlighted in the second inning where they scored five runs.  Singles by Lorri Cole, Carrie Webster and Kristen Piner's RBI-single set up a White's first career grand slam to cut the lead to 10-5.  Anderson then scored three in the top of the third and two in the fourth to end the game.

Meredith returns to action on February 18 as they travel to Randolph College for a 1 p.m. double header.
