Softball Splits with Bishops
RALEIGH, N.C. - The Avenging Angels split today's USA South softball doubleheader with the visiting Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan (4-4, 1-1 USA South). Meredith (4-5, 2-1 USA South) claimed game one 4-2, and Welsyan scored three in the sixth to seal the second 9-7.
NCW opened the day with a single and a double and scored both on an outfielder error to take a two-run advantage.
Leah Friedman led off for the Avenging Angels in the bottom of the frame with a single up the middle but was out on a fielder's choice to shortstop by Amanda White. Ashley Green and Lorri Cole each advanced on a walk to load the bases, and Sara Cranford and Mindi Stallings earned RBI singles to tie the game.
White extended the lead on a solo homerun in the third and Green drilled the ball to left field in the fifth to earn an RBI-double for the win.
Amanda Beirne secured her third win on the season allowing a pair of hits and notching nine strikeouts.
Meredith carried the momentum into game two when Friedman and White opened the nightcap with a pair of singles. Cole scored both on a long single to center field to put the Angels on the board first.
Wesleyan's Carla Matthews launched a homer over the center field fence for the lone Bishops score in the second.
The Meredith bats continued to fire in the bottom of the inning with a lead off single from Whitney Williams. Rookie Kayla Lane advanced Williams to second on a sacrifice bunt, and White and Green combined for three RBI to push the lead to four.
After picking up a run in the third, the visitors scored four more in the fourth with help from a pair of Meredith errors to take a one-run lead.
The Avenging Angels took two runs back in the bottom of the stanza on singles from Green and Cole to reclaim the lead.
A scoreless fifth inning put the Bishops at the top of their batting order for the sixth. Catcher Brittni Jones popped an RBI-single to left and Paige Pritchett scored the game winners on a home run to left center.
Beirne took the loss with her second complete game on the day, and Kelsi Bailey pitched four innings for her second win this season.
Meredith travels to Mary Baldwin and Averett next weekend. First pitch is slated for Noon in Staunton Saturday, March 16, and 1 p.m. in Danville Sunday.
