Softball Sweeps Methodist
RALEIGH, N.C. - The Avenging Angel softball team held off a Methodist run in the sixth inning of game one to secure a 7-6 win. To complete the home series sweep, Amanda White and Sara Cranford drilled a pair of homeruns in game two to lead Meredith to a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
MC improved to 8-7 overall, 6-3 in the USA South, and the Monarchs fell to 13-13 on the season and 4-4 among league competitors.
Meredith's Amanda Beirne pitched two complete games allowing 11 hits with four earned runs and 13 strikeouts. Jessica Farmer and Brittany Miller took a loss apiece for MU.
The Monarchs took a first-inning lead on a 2-RBI double from Ally Griffin.
In the bottom of the frame, Ashley Green drilled a triple to right field and scored on the next at-bat, thanks to a single from Amanda White, to put the Avenging Angels on the board.
The Monarchs picked up a run in the fourth and Meredith rallied in the bottom of the frame to take the lead on a trio of runs. The Avenging Angels repeated the effort in the next inning to extend the lead to four.
MU loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and Beirne teamed up with catcher Lorri Cole to prevent a run from scoring.
Lindsay Tippett punched a single to center field scoring one and the next at-bat popped up for the second out. The Monarchs scored two more on another hit from Griffin before Beirne struckout Miller to end the run and secure the win.
In game two Meredith recorded a pair of runs in the first two innings, and the Monarchs picked up a RBI-single in the third.
Methodist changed pitchers in the bottom of the fourth inning and popped up to the shortstop to leadoff for the Angels. White launched one to left and rounded the bases, and Cole advanced to first on a single to center. Cranford sealed the win with her 2-RBI homer.
Meredith's doubleheader versus Greensboro College originally scheduled for Sunday was postponed until April 4 due to the rainy forecast. The Avenging Angels travel instead to Ferrum for their next league event Saturday, March 29.
