Softball Splits USA South Doubleheader with Maryville (Tenn.)

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Avenging Angels (10-9, 8-5 USA South) dropped game one 1-0 in extra-innings before picking up a 4-1 win for the split in today's conference doubleheader at Maryville College (2-30, 2-16 USA South).

Meredith posted just two hits early in game one before Maryville's shortstop Megan Mihaliak drove in the winning run on a single to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim the win.

Amanda Beirne entered the game in the third inning to pitch for Amanda White. She allowed two hits and struckout four in the loss. The Scots Lexie Randolph pitched a complete game for the win.

In game two Maryville scored the first run on a RBI-single in the third inning. Avenging Angels Leah Friedman teamed up with White and catcher Lorri Cole to save another run on the play.

With two outs on the board in the top of the fifth, Alex Warren walked and Sara Cranford moved her to the corner on a single to right. Courtney Saunders drove in Warren to tie the game.

In the bottom of the frame, Beirne struckout the first two batters before the third reached on an infield error. Cole picked up the shortstop with a clean throw to second to catch the runner.

Meredith added one more in the next inning on a trio of Avenging Angel hits and secured another with help from an error.

Courtney Saunders launched a double to left field in the top of the seventh to keep the offense rolling for Meredith. She advanced to third on the next at-bat and made it home on a ground out from Friedman to secure the win.

Beirne posted her ninth win allowing four hits with one run and six strikeouts.

Meredith travels to Mary Baldwin Tuesday, April 2, before hosting three doubleheaders to close out the final week of the regular season. Greensboro College travels to Raleigh Thursday for a 2 p.m. meeting with the Angels, and league-leader Piedmont visits Saturday with LaGrange Sunday.
