Softball Drops USA South Tournament Opener 4-0 to Ferrum

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The #5 Meredith College softball team dropped Friday's USA South Conference Tournament opener 4-0 to the #4 Ferrum Panthers. Panther catcher Amanda Roberts scored the eventual game winner on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to advance FC to the next round.

Ferrum will play #8 LaGrange in the next round scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. The LaGrange Panthers upset top-seeded Piedmont, ranked seventh in the latest national Division III poll, to remain in the winner's bracket. Meredith will face the Lions next at 1 p.m.

Avenging Angels Courtney Saunders and Katlyn Johnson each posted a single, but defensive issues plagued Meredith in the loss.

Panther Aiyana Lew scored two runs for Ferrum on a pair of RBI-singles, and Sadie Wallace finished off the Angels with a homer to center.

Emily Taylor earned her fourth win on the season with a two-hit shutout. Meredith's Amanda Beirne took the loss in her 32nd complete game pitched on the year.
