MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Meredith College softball Avenging Angels required eight innings to down the host Maryville Scots 6-5 in game one of Sunday's USA South doubleheader. But Meredith managed the Scots 6-2 in the nightcap for the sweep.
The Angels opened the day on a pair of singles from Haley Ervin and Kelsey Mabe, followed by an infield error to load the bases. Sarah Watson earned an RBI-walk, and Erica Occena scored Mabe to give the Angels an early 2-0 advantage.
Ervin picked up another hit in the second inning, but the Avenging Angels would not score again until the fifth. Julia Allsbrook led off the frame with a single, and Ervin recorded her third hit on the day. Ellen Blevins entered to run, and both runners advanced a base thanks to Mabe's sacrifice. Brittany Bucklin scored both with her double to right center to push the Angels ahead by four.
The advantage was shortlived as the Scots rallied in the sixth with four runs on four hits. Myah Morse assumed the pitching duties for Taylor Jackson with one out and two on. The runners advanced a base apiece, but Morse left both on base with a fly out to Sarah Watson to keep the game even at 4-4.
An RBI-double from Maria Annunziata put Meredith back in front in the seventh, but Maryville responded in the bottom of the stanza thanks to aggressive base running to move the game into extra innings.
With two outs and Maryville runners on second and third, Morse pitched for an infield grounder to end the game in favor of the Avenging Angels.
Morse earned her third win on the season with two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched. Taylor Jackson recorded the start and allowed eight hits in 5.2 innings pitched with four earned runs, a pair of walks, striking out one. Maryville's Morgan Coreland posted the loss for the Scots.
The Angels maintained their momentum into the second game scoring three runs in the third. Rachel Peel and Allsbrook led off with a pair of errors, and Ervin moved both another base with a sacrifice. Mabe scored Peel on a single to left, and Bucklin drove in two more with a hit up the middle for a 3-0 Meredith lead.
The Scots drove in a run in the bottom of the fram with a wild pitch and scored one more in the fourth to pull to within one.
Meredith's Cox responded with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Blevins drove in a fifth run on an RBI-single to left.
With two runners on base in the seventh, Bucklin scored both on a single down the left field line to advance Meredith's lead to 6-2.
Morse walked two Scots in the bottom of the frame but struck out the fourth batter for two outs. Cox and Mabe put out the fifth and final batter on the next play for the win and the sweep.
Morse pitched a complete game for Meredith striking out six with seven walks, five hits, and a pair of earned runs. Casey Joliff recorded the loss for the Scots.
The Avenging Angels return to Raleigh for a make-up USA South doubleheader Thursday with cross-town rival William Peace. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. at the Meredith softball complex.
