Softball Suffers 2-0 Loss in USA South Tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The East second-seed Meredith College softball squad suffered a 2-0 loss to the West four-seed Covenant Scots in Friday's USA South Tournament action at the Spring Festival in LaGrange, Georgia. With the loss the Avenging Angels moved to the elimination bracket and will play East third-seed Averett University Saturday at 10 a.m. at Shuford Fields.

Covenant opened today's game strong with a one-out RBI-triple in the top of the first inning and scored a second with help from a Meredith infield error. The Angels went one-two-three in the bottom of the frame to remain down 2-0. 

Brittany Bucklin and Julia Allsbrook singled in the second, and Bryce Smith pushed Bucklin to the corner on a fielder's choice. Smith Stole second but both runners were left stranded with a strikeout in the next at-bat.

Neither team made much of a stride through the next two innings. The Scots loaded the bases in the fifth, but Meredith held them at 2-0. Erica Occena advanced on a walk in the bottom of the inning and made her way to third with a stolen base and an error but was left on base heading into the sixth.

Another three-up-three-down for Covenant brought Haley Ervin to the plate for a bunt single in the sixth. An unfortunate double play cleared the bases, and Eran Artigues added another runner with a single to left center. Bucklin walked but the Scots closed out the inning with the next batter.

Covenant loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs, and Bucklin finished off the frame with an unassisted putout at third. But the Avenging Angels were unable to rally in the bottom of the for the loss.

Myah Morse pitched through four batters in the fifth and was relieved by Taylor Jackson. Morse allowed two hits, one run, three walks, and one strikeout in her fifth loss. Jackson allowed two hits with no runs earned, two walks, and striking out one to close out the game. Covenant's Sarah Huskey earned the win with Joni Johnson picking up her first save on the season.
