Avenging Angels Take Lead in Final Two Minutes to Steal 72-69 Win from Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Sophomore transfer McKenzi Edwards joined the lineup today for the first time this season to lead Meredith College to a 72-69 win over the Randolph WildCats. Edwards led the Avenging Angels with 14 points and dished out a game-high six assists.

The win pulled Meredith out of a four-game losing streak to improve to 2-5 overall, while the WildCats dropped to 3-6 on the season.

The hosts opened up the afternoon contest with a seven-point lead over Meredith at 15:25. Sophomore forward Rebekah Cox tied the game at 14 on a fastbreak layup thanks to a steal from teammate Bryana Holmes.

The teams exchanged baskets before Randolph edged ahead by four. The WildCats won the battle during the final minutes of the first period to hold onto a three-point lead going into the locker room at the intermission.

The game remained close during the first eight minutes after the break with the Aveninging Angels just four points down at 12:01. But the WildCats surged ahead to a 12-point advantage with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Holmes launched a pair of threes along with a two-pointer to pull her team back to within five at 6:18. Edwards added three more buckets and an extra point to challenge the Randolph defense.

With just under three minutes remaining in the game, Tyler Gresham cleared a pair of free throws to pull Meredith to within two.

Each team endured ball handling mishaps during the next 30 seconds of play when Edwards capitalized on a WildCat turnover to tie the game at 66 with just 1:45 remaining.

Randolph missed their next chance to score and Edwards fed Danielle Lee for a Meredith layup to give the Avenging Angels their first lead of the game at 1:15.

Randolph's Emilee Dunton laid one in on the next play to tie the game at 68. The WildCats continued to pressure Meredith and picked up a steal and a foul to claim a one-point lead with 50 seconds left in the game.

Gresham put-back an offensive rebound to reclaim the lead with just 26 seconds remaining. The Avenging Angels finished off Randolph with a pair of solo free throws in the final seconds of play to hold onto the much needed win.

Holmes and Cox added 11 points apiece for Meredith. Keyanka Bailey scored nine and grabbed a game-high nine boards in the win.

WildCat Brianna Lowry led all with 15 points, adding four assists. Bria Carlisle added 11 and picked up five rebounds.

Meredith hosts Hollins University Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Weatherspoon Gymnasium to close out the holiday weekend.
