Meredith Completes Holiday Weekend with 74-65 Victory

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College Avenging Angels rounded out the holiday weekend with a 74-65 home-court victory over Hollins University. McKenzi Edwards and Danielle Lee knocked down free throws in the final seconds of play to keep Hollins at bay for the team's second consecutive win.

The Avenging Angels improved to 3-5 on the season, and the visitors fell to 2-6 with the loss.

Keyanka Bailey set the tone in the early seconds of play with her first of four steals followed by a crisp jumper. Meredith complimented that defensive pressure with 50% field goal shooting in the first half to enjoy a 14-point lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first period.

HU's leaders Jasmine Greene and Chanci Wright helped Hollins cut that lead to seven going into the half.

The visitors carried that momentum through the intermission and pulled to within one point in the early minutes of second period play.

Bailey and senior Bryana Holmes unleashed a three-point extravaganza to extend that lead back to seven at the 10-minute mark. Rebekah Cox claimed her position in the paint to collect an offensive rebound and score on the putback to maintain the edge.

Wright laid in back-to-back buckets to open up a 10-2 Hollins run that would tie the game at 55 with 5:10 remaining in regulation.

Kristen Alford floated an assist to Rah'nika Jones in the paint on the next play followed by another steal from Bailey. Alford missed a three-pointer but followed her shot to grab the board and finish with a layup to hold onto a four-point lead.

Edwards picked up another steal as Hollins reached mid-court and created an opportunity for a pair of free throws on the play.

HU continued to battle but a poised and patient Meredith squad maintained composure down the stretch to secure the win.

Bailey led all with 24 points, and Alford added a dozen. Cox rounded out the double-digit Angels with 10 points, adding five rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Holmes led Meredith with seven boards, adding nine points, three assists and three steals. Edwards managed the offense with six assists and nine points.

Wright and Greene combined for 38 of HU's 65 total points, and Wright picked up a game-high 12 rebounds in the loss.

Meredith hosts Mary Baldwin and Averett in a USA South weekend beginning with the Fighting Squirrels Friday night, January 4. The Cougars face off with the Avenging Angels Saturday at 4 p.m.
