Holmes Seals Win at Buzzer

RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior Bryana Holmes saved the night for the Meredith Avenging Angels (6-12) when she netted one from deep for a 64-63 OT win at the buzzer over visiting Southern Virginia (9-7). With a three-point lead and 26 seconds remaining in regulation, an unfortunate Meredith foul gave Ann Kuroki three free throw attempts to tie the game sending the non-conference contest into overtime.

The game opened with a slow and steady offensive effort from both teams as the Avenging Angels held a 13-12 advantage at 11:32. Meredith emerged from the next 11 minutes with a nine-point lead at the half.

After the break the hosts extended their advantage to 13 jump started by a field goal from McKenzi Edwards.

Led by Amaris Newkirk the Knights launched a 14-4 run during the next 7:38 to cut the Meredith lead to just three with 10:24 remaining in regulation.

Keyanka Bailey returned the favor driving to the paint on the next play, assisted by Edwards. Edwards dished one to Kim Hinton in the next series before picking up a steal and a foul to push the Meredith advantage back to eight.

Southern Virginia controlled the ball during the next three minutes adding a pair of inside buckets from Crystal Cleveland.

Edwards waisted no time moving the ball down the court for a quick jumper and finished the next offensive set off a steal from Danielle Lee.

The battle continued with Kuroki at the line for her three free throws to send the game into the extra period.

The game's only three point shooters, Holmes and SVUs Katie Swenson, scored the only two buckets in the first 3:36 of overtime.

After Edwards netted a pair from the stripe to give Meredith a two-point lead with just 1:24 remaining in OT, the Knight's kicked off a 5-0 run to swing the game back in favor of Southern Virginia.

Lee dished Edwards a pass good for a jumper with just 10 seconds remaining and the visitors still ahead by one.

A Meredith foul sent Cleveland to the line, and she left the door open for the Avenging Angels.

In the final seconds of play, Edwards drove the ball up the middle and dished off to Holmes for a buzzer-beater on the wing.

Edwards led all with a career-high 25 points, adding seven assists in the win. Holmes finished with 18, all from three-point range. Bailey posted the team's only double-double with a dozen points and 10 rebounds, and Kim Hinton grabbed 11 boards on the night.

Cleveland and Newkirk posted a double-double apiece with a combined 37 points and 23 rebounds. Newkirk had a near triple-double on the night adding a game-high nine assists for the Knight's.
