Basketball Angels Run Out of Steam in 93-40 Loss to Captains

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College Avenging Angels faced off with nationally ranked Christopher Newport in Sunday's home opener. Meredith played a strong first half against the Captains but ran out of steam down the stretch in a 93-40 loss to the former USA South member. Jessi Hayes led the Angels with 14 points, and Amy Rhoney notched eight rebounds, three assists.

Strong ball movement during the first two periods kept Meredith close, as Rhoney and Meghan Pleasants worked well together inside the paint. Brittany Preston and Carly Endean provided support for Hayes on the perimeter and kept the Captains stretched wide on defense.

Endean struggled with her jump shot, but the rookie will find her rhythm soon to help the Angels' offense. Maddie Gladwell entered off the bench to rest Hayes and grabbed a pair of rebounds and assists during her 11 minutes on the floor.

After the intermission, CNU turned up the heat outscoring the Angels 51-18 to put away the game.

Preston finished with nine points, three rebounds, and three assists, and Pleasants recorded eight points, four boards.

Christpher Newport's Anitra Thomas led all with 15 points, while Annemarie Beran notched 10 points, seven rebounds for the Captains.

The Angels open a nine-game road series tomorrow at Guilford, followed by Roanoke Wednesday evening. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. start with live action available HERE.
