Lacrosse Drops First-Ever Season Opener to Piedmont, 16-5

DEMOREST, Ga. - The new Meredith lacrosse team dropped its season opener 16-5 at Piedmont College Saturday. Today's USA South action marked the first-ever varsity women's lacrosse match for the Avenging Angels.

The Lions opened the Noon game scoring five within the first 18 minutes, including a pair of free position goals.

Rookie Katie Burnet scored the first of back-to-back goals for the Avenging Angels with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. Teammate Danielle Lee added the second on a free position shot with 2:01 left on the clock.

Piedmont's Maggie McDaniel completed a hat trick to send her team into the break with a 6-2 advantage.

After the intermission PC quickly scored two more goals before Burnet posted her second of the match for Meredith.

Lee added another goal five minutes later to cut the Lion lead to five.

Piedmont maintained control during the next 20 minutes when Lottie Meadows topped off the scoring for the Avenging Angels with just under seven minutes left in the game. MacKenzie Smith assisted on the play.

Meredith's keeper Andie Stuber was credited with two saves in the loss, and Carly Haraka posted six for the Lions.

The Avenging Angels remain in Georgia for a Sunday pairing at LaGrange College slated for a 2 p.m. start at Panther Field.
