LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Meredith Avenging Angels lacrosse team posted an 8-7 win over LaGrange College for the program's first win in school history. Both USA South teams moved to 1-1 on the season.
LaGrange's Ashley Davis scored on a free position and the hosts added another goal to edge past the Avenging Angels by one.
Meadows acted quickly after an unforced Panther turnover to feed Burnet for a goal at 12:46. The pair scored again and Burnet followed with an assist to MacKenzie Smith to give Meredith a two-point advantage with just under 10 minutes remaining in the period.
LC scored twice more to tie the game going into the half.
Danielle Lee ended a 15-minute defensive battle between the two teams with a free position goal in the second stanza. Meadows followed with a pair of goals to record the team's second hat trick on the day and give Meredith a two-point lead with 4:02 remaining in regulation. Burnet completed her trio of scores in the first period.
The Avenging Angels held the Panthers to just one more goal to secure the victory.
Meredith goalie Andie Stuber posted a dozen saves in the win, and Panther keeper Chelsea Totaro earned seven on the day.
Wednesday, February 27, at Noon, the athletics department will host a campus pep rally in Belk quad to generate excitement in time for the program's first home games next weekend. Meet the team, learn a lacrosse move and enjoy a homemade cupcake in celebration of this new Avenging Angel program.
The team returns to the field next weekend for a pair of USA South contests in Raleigh. Meredith opens at home Saturday versus Ferrum at 2 p.m followed by a 12 p.m. match with the Scotties of Agnes Scott Sunday.
Local alumnae and former Meredith student-athletes are invited to bring their families for a day of fun Saturday at the Meredith Athletic Field. The lacrosse coaching staff will host a youth clinic on the field beginning at 11:30 a.m. Food will be on-hand for purchase before and during the game sponsored by the alumnae office.
