RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College (3-2, 3-2 USA South) lacrosse team cruised to a 17-3 win in today's USA South pairing with N.C. Wesleyan (0-4, 0-1 USA South). Under cold, blustery conditions local rookie Katie Burnet led a strong offensive front with five goals and four assists.
Eliza Evans, Taylor Pearce and Lottie Meadows joined the mix as the Avenging Angels took an early 7-0 lead with 17:03 remaining in the first period. MacKenzie Smith assisted on two occasions during the stretch and Meadows pitched in for three.
After the seventh score for Meredith, the Bishops claimed the draw control and capitalized on an Avenging Angel foul to reach the net. Ashley Marks earned the goal with an assist by Haley Hopkins.
Meadows and Burnet added three more unassisted goals and Danielle Lee reached the net on a free position opportunity. Angie Ramkellawan netted her first career goal just before the break to send Meredith into the locker room with a 12-1 advantage.
Marks and Hopkins netted a goal apiece in the opening minutes of the second half but the Bishops would get no closer the rest of the way.
Burnet finished with a seven ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers, with Meadows posting three assists and three draws. Lee led all with nine ground balls in the win. Defender Lauren DeLucia stepped into the offensive lineup for Meredith in the final minutes of the game and posted her first goal this season.
Meredith keeper Andie Stuber posted five saves in her third win on the season, while NCWC's Marissa Santos tallied 11 in her 60 minutes in the box.
Meredith hosts Saint Vincent College of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, in a Noon game Friday, March 8, to round out the home series. The team heads to Randolph College Saturday for a 3 p.m. non-league pairing. Follow the game live.
