Lacrosse Coasts to 12-4 Win at Hollins

ROANOKE, Va. - Meredith's (4-4) women's lacrosse team scored five consecutive goals in the final nine minutes to secure the 12-4 win over Hollins University (1-4) in Wednesday's non-conference action.

After a quiet 8:18 ticked off the clock, Meredith's captain Lottie Meadows opened the scoring in today's road contest. Attacker MacKenzie Smith assisted on the play.

Meadows earned her second-of-five game-high draw controls on the next play to give the Avenging Angels another offensive attempt. Hollins keeper Corrine Nicholson captured the save and led her team to a successful clear, but an HU turnover gave the ball back to Meredith.

Eliza Evans picked up the ground ball and helped Meredith down the field. Sophomore Danielle Lee gave the Avenging Angels a 2-0 advantage on a free position shot in the series.

Hollins netted a goal midway through the first period before Meredith's Meadows and rookie Katie Burnet followed with a pair of scores to carry a 4-1 lead into the half.

The hosts claimed the first draw after the break, but the Avenging Angels claimed quick control of the match. Meadows caused an HU turnover in the opening play, collected the ground ball and cradled the ball all the way to the net. She recovered her first shot attempt and netted the next to give Meredith a four-point advantage.

Meadows scored again at 23:55 to extend that lead to five, and Taylor Pearce followed 54 seconds later with a free position goal.

Hollins scored three consecutive goals during the next 9:17 to pull to within three but would not reach the net again during regulation.

After Meadows notched her 22nd career goal with 8:49 left on the clock, Lee netted four consecutive goals to secure the win. Burnet assisted Lee on three of her attempts.

Meadows and Lee led all with five goals, while Lee caused four turnovers and posted as many ground balls. Burnet assisted on four Meredith goals and defender Tyara Nevels tallied a career-high three caused turnovers in the win.

Chancey Wright and Lindley Taylor led the scoring for Hollins.

The Avenging Angels enjoy a three-match home series beginning Wednesday, March 20, with USA South foe Greensboro College. The conference pairing is slated to begin at 5 p.m. at the Meredith Athletic Field and Track.
