FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The First-Ever Meredith (5-9, 4-4 USA South) Lacrosse team secured a bid in the 2013 USA South Women's Lacrosse Tournament with Wednesday's 20-7 victory over Methodist University (1-10, 1-7 USA South). Rookie Katie Burnet and captain Lottie Meadows combined for 14 goals in the win.
The victory qualified Meredith for the conference tournament as the fifth seed. The top six teams advance to the post-season. The Avenging Angels travel to fourth-seeded Piedmont College Sunday, while LaGrange faces third-seeded Greensboro, in round one of the tournament action. The winners advance to the semifinals in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Friday, April 12.
Methodist's Zhane' Ruffin scored the opening goal in today's league match to hold their only lead during regulation.
Lee controlled the next draw and Burnet corralled a pass from Meadows for the quick goal to extend the Avenging Angel lead. Meredith maintained control of the offense on their way to a 12-4 halftime lead.
After the break Burnet scored three consecutive points as the Avenging Angels cruised to their fourth conference win of the season.
Burnet finished with nine points on eight goals and one assist, and Meadows netted six-of-seven attempts for Meredith. Lee scored two and posted a dozen draw controls and five ground balls in the win.
Cassie Walter led the Monarchs with five points, including three goals.
