Lacrosse Wins Season Opener 18-7 at Sweet Briar

SWEET BRIAR, Va. - Under clear but cold and extremely windy conditions, the Meredith College lacrosse team captured an 18-7 victory at Sweet Briar College Monday afternoon. Led by sophomore midfielder Katie Burnet, Meredith outshot the Vixens 38-14 to secure the win.

Avenging Angel rookie Jennifer Halvorson opened the scoring two minutes into the game after Danielle Lee forced a Vixen turnover to give MC lax the ball.

Burnet scored back-to-back goals to extend the Meredith lead to three before Sweet Briar's Allison McLamb put the Vixen's on the board.

Molly Miller delivered a pass to Burnet in the 20th minute for her third-of-six first-half goals.

The hosts continued to battle throughout the first period, but Meredith held a 10-5 advantage at the break.

The teams exchanged goals through 12:36 of the second frame when Meredith took control of the scoring for good.

Burnet tallied a game-high nine goals in 17 attempts, including a 13 on goal. She added two ground balls and draw controls apiece. Miller recorded three goals and as many assists in her collegiate debut, and Halvorson, Lee and Alison Reisert added two apiece in the win.

Sweet Briar's Monica Ewansik scored a team-high three goals in her seven shots for the Vixens.
