Lacrosse Downs Division II Coker Cobras 17-9

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Meredith College lacrosse team captured their sixth consecutive win, and second versus a Division II team, with Monday's 17-9 victory over the Coker College Cobras. Rookie Raven Winters tallied four goals and six assists to lead the Avenging Angels in the first of two spring break events.

Cobras Hayley Ferone and Marabeth Durden opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first three minutes of play to give Coker a 2-0 lead.

Meredith's Katie Burnet caused a Coker turnover at 24:34 and Molly Miller finished the offensive series with a goal from Winters to put the Angels on the board. Four more consecutive goals gave Meredith a 5-2 lead with 15:22 remaining in the half.

Coker's Lindsay Ordermann scored an eight meter shot 1:24 later before the Avenging Angels cruised to an 11-4 lead heading into the break.

After the intermission Coker's Ferone netted her second-of three goals on the day.

Meredith's Burnet won the draw and fed the ball to veteran Angel Lottie Meadows for a score. Meadows was reinstated to the lineup today after sitting out the opening weeks due to injury.

The Cobras scored four of the next five to get as close as 13-9, but Jennifer Halvorson netted three consecutive goals to help Meredith pull away for good.

Burnet and Halvorson joined Winters with four goals apiece, and Miller contributed three in the win. Burnet added six draw controls and four caused turnovers for Meredith, and rookie goalie Meghan Brooks posted five saves in her sixth career win.

Ferone and Mackenzie Baker netted three goals apiece for Coker, and Mandy Lopez tallied eight saves in the loss in goal for the Cobras.

Meredith returns to Hilton Head's Chaplin Park Thursday at 1 p.m. for a non-league battle with New Jersey's Kean University Cougars. The Avenging Angels return to their home turf Saturday, March 15, for a Noon match versus the USA South's current leader Piedmont College.

Note: Meredith's honorary bench coach Bob Valesente (pictured in today's team shot with the Meredith squad) shared a few words of wisdom with the Avenging Angels after Monday's win. Valesente's decorated football coaching career includes time with the Kansas Jayhawks and Maryland Terrapins before advancing to the NFL with the Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers.
