NEWBERRY, N.C. - In what turned out to be the final game of the 2014 regular season, the Meredith College lacrosse team downed Division II Newberry College 21-9. Katie Burnet and Danielle Lee netted seven goals apiece in the win.
The Avenging Angels jumped out to a 4-1 lead on three Burnet scores.
One of two top scorers for the Wolves interrupted Meredith on the next play, but Burnet and Lottie Meadows added three more points to extend the Angel lead to five with 18:37 remaining in the half.
Newberry's KerriAnn Barlage exchanged goals with Lee on the next four points to maintain Meredith's five-point advantage.
The Wolves picked up the next draw control but alternated turnovers with Meredith leaving Doyle with a groundball headed down field. Burnet collected the ball and scored after an eight meter foul by Newberry.
The Wolves netted one final goal before the intermission to cut Meredith's halftime lead to six.
Lee scored Meredith's first three second-period goals, when Jennifer Halvorson racked up three consecutive scores to increase the Meredith lead to a 17-8 advantage with 13:12 remaining in regulation.
Winters sent the differential into double-digits with back-to-back points before Newberry netted one final shot.
Lee and Burnet closed out the win on a goal apiece after a pair of Winters' draw controls.
Burnet added four assists to her point total, and Molly Miller and Doyle recorded two apiece. Winters led all with a game-high nine draw controls, adding six caused turnovers. Goalie Anna Adcock posted her fifth win in goal with five saves.
Saturday's originally scheduled event versus the Columbia College Koalas was canceled due to the severe weather forecasted for tomorrow. Meredith heads straight to the semifinals of the USA South Conference Tournament scheduled for Friday, April 11, in Rocky Mount.
