ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Apex, North Carolina, midfielder and 2014 conference Player of the Year Katie Burnet set new league records Friday as second-seeded Meredith College lacrosse downed the third-seeded Ferrum Panthers 19-5 to advance to Saturday's USA South Championship match. A league-sponsored sport since 2001, Burnet's 107 points and 77 goals set new conference individual season records in women's lacrosse.
The Avenging Angels will face top-seeded Piedmont in the finals Saturday with the first draw slated for 1 p.m. at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex football stadium. The Lions defeated fourth-seeded Greensboro 17-13 to advance.
Burnet matched her second-highest career total with eight goals in today's match, adding a pair of assists, four groundballs and four draw controls.
Danielle Lee scored first and Burnet followed as the Avenging Angels cruised to a 12-3 first half advantage. Lee finished the game with four goals and as many draw controls.
Rookie Raven Winters led all with five draw controls and joined three Angels each who tallied three points in the win. Lottie Meadows posted two goals, one assist, while Winters, Jennifer Halvorson and Victoria Doyle each netted a solo goal with a pair of assists.
Five Panthers scored a goal apiece, and Sydney Hewartson added an assist to lead Ferrum with two points in the loss.
Meredith keeper Anna Adcock grabbed two saves as she claimed her sixth win on the season. Amanda Cheney took the loss for Ferrum with eight saves.
