UMW Hands Lacrosse a 12-4 Loss

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Meredith College lacrosse Angels lost 12-4 to a seasoned Mary Washington squad, ranked nationally in the preseason poll. Carlee Joseph led MC Lax with two goals, and Molly Miller recorded three assists.

Meredith stopped the Eagles on their first offensive series, and Joseph put the Angels on the board at the other end of the field.

UMW responded with four quick points and would find the net twice more with just seconds remaining in the period. Sarah Arbes controlled the next draw with Mary Washington ahead 6-1, and Joseph found the box with just nine ticks left on the clock before intermission.

After the break the Eagles extended their lead to seven through the first twelve minutes of the second half.

In the 14th minute of the period, Jennifer Halvorson scored on Miller's third assist, and Holly Hite scored on a free position attempt five minutes later to close out the scoring for the Avenging Angels. UMW would add three more points to complete the win.

Rookie goalie Haley Whitfield faced an aggressive Eagle attack recording seven saves in her first collegiate appearance, and Hanna Ashby earned the win for Mary Washington.

The Avenging Angels travel to Guilford February 22 for a 7 p.m. non-conference match before returning to their home turf next weekend to host Roanoke. Follow the action live HERE.
