RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith Angel Danielle Lee scored her team's second goal late in Friday night's game to defeat Birmingham Southern 2-1. The match opened day-one of the National Invitational Classic which closed with a 2-2 tie in double overtime between #2 Emory and #3 Johns Hopkins.
The win gives Meredith its third consecutive to open the 2012 season. BSC fell to 1-1-1 thus far.
Meredith's Jesse Davis scored the first goal of the game, her second this year, in the 27th minute. The Panthers tied it up 10 minutes later on a goal by freshman Heidrun Gudmundsdottir. She was assisted by Jessie Sperry.
The score remained tied through the half and much of the second period. Lee scored off an assist from Kimberly Williams with just under seven minutes remaining. The Panthers were unable to counter and took the 2-1 loss.
Keeper Kelsey Hopper played a complete match and earned four saves on the night. In addition to Davis and Lee, Carrie Talbert contributed two shots in the win.
Meredith completes the National Invitational Classic pairing off with the Emory Eagles Sunday at 2:15 p.m. BSC and Hopkins open the day on the field at Noon.
