Soccer Falls to Scots in Battle for First

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Meredith College soccer team fell 5-1 to the host Maryville Scots in today's battle for the league lead.

Maryville opened the match with a quick goal within the first three minutes of play unassisted by Allyson Hale.

The offensive attacks remained even during the period until the Scots once again reached the net, this time by Ashley Howarth. Howarth was assisted by Kelsie Kestner on the play.

Down by two at the half, Meredith allowed another push from Maryville as Sierra Siegel opened the second period with another quick attack from the Scots.

Meredith battled back with two shots angling wide and an on-goal from Jessie Davis saved by the Maryville keeper. Davis challenged again with a corner kick at the 52:04 mark before the Avenging Angels made another attack on goal with sophomore Morgan Edwards at the helm. Edwards found the back of the net for the first time this season to put Meredith on the board with just over 37 minutes remaining.

The Scots would score twice more in the next five minutes to complete the scoring on the day.

All four Meredith keepers saw action on the field today with starter Kelsey Hopper leaving with four saves and the loss. Margaret Wyatt grabbed two saves in her 21 minutes in goal.

Maryville goalie Michelle Foulke earned the win with four saves on the day.

After today's USA South action, Meredith will fight for third in tomorrow's battle with Ferrum. The first kick is slated for 2:00 p.m. at the home of the Panthers.
