Soccer Releases 2013 Slate

RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith College Head Soccer Coach Paul Smith announced his 2013 schedule Tuesday. Smith begins his 11th season with the Avenging Angels in August.

MC opens the season at Virginia Wesleyan's Orthopaedic Associates Virginia Classic pairing off first with the hosts on Saturday, August 31, at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon the Avenging Angels face the Christopher Newport Captains, who will be a non-conference opponent next year as they begin their departure from the USA South.

The Avenging Angels host the Meredith Classic the following weekend with the State University of New York at New Paltz, Guilford College and Salem College traveling to Raleigh for the weekend. MC opens with the Hawks at Noon on September 7, followed by a North Carolina pairing between the Quakers and Spirits. The Angels end the weekend versus Salem on Sunday.

After winning a conference championship in 2011, New Paltz ended their 2012 run with an overtime loss in the quarterfinals of the SUNYAC tournament. GC (4-15) completed the ODAC regular season 3-9 and was eliminated from tournament consideration, while Salem earned the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) regular season title with a 9-1 conference record, 16-3-1 overall.

Before heading into the USA South Conference season, Meredith will host Randolph College September 11 and travel to Greensboro the following Wednesday to face the Quakers.

The Avenging Angels host new member Huntingdon in the conference opener September 21. The Hawks completed the 2012 campaign 3-14-1 and lost to GSAC tournament champion Agnes Scott in the semis. A meeting with LaGrange closes out the doubleheader weekend.

Meredith spends the next five games on the road beginning with a trip to Georgia to face Piedmont and newcomer Covenant College. The series includes a midweek trip to Mary Baldwin, a Saturday afternoon contest at Greensboro and caps off with a trip over the mountain to Maryville during the college's autumn recess.

William Peace visits Meredith for the season's cancer awareness event to open a four-game home stretch October 13. Methodist and Averett fill in the gap before senior day versus the Ferrum Panthers October 27. The Avenging Angels travel to Rocky Mount to close out the regular season with N.C. Wesleyan on the 30th.

For the fifth consecutive year, the USA South will host the men's and women's soccer championships in Martinsville, Virginia, as part the 2013 Fall Sports Festival. All four semifinal and both title games will be held at the Smith River Sports Complex November 8-9. The volleyball tournament moved to Martinsville for the first time in 2012 and will continue its tenure in Stone Hall on the campus of Patrick Henry Community College.
