Pair of Goals Enough for Win Over Knights

Cassie Padilla scores one goal in a 2-0 win over Southern Virginia.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College capped off the program's annual Soccer Classic with a 2-0 win over Southern Virginia and a 2-0 record to open the season. Cassie Padilla finished off a pass from Jessica Wallace to give the Angels a 1-0 first half advantage, and rookie Kathryn Nelson punched in a pass from classmate Katie Quinn in the 71st minute to secure the win.

N.C. Wesleyan and the Sewanee Tigers finished the first match in a draw.

Wallace and Padilla combined for 9-of-13 shots to lead the attack for the Angels compared to just six from SVU.

With less than 10 minutes left on the clock and the urgency to score rising for Southern Virginia, Jaisa Loch stopped an attempt by Taylor Mercer to close out the options for the visitors. Loch notched four saves for her second win. Katie Vaughn tallied three stops for Southern Virginia.

Meredith remains at home to host the Esprit DIII Classic next weekend. The Angels will play new USA South member Pfeiffer University Saturday at Noon, and Atlanta's Emory Sunday afternoon. Both visiting teams face off with Johns Hopkins, ranked 13th in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA DIII preseason poll, on alternate days. Follow the action live HERE.
