Emory Soccer Too Much for Angels Defense

Kirstie King

RALEIGH, N.C. -- In Sunday's second day of the Meredith College Esprit DIII Soccer Classic, Emory handled the Avenging Angels for a 3-0 victory. Meredith launched three attempts at the net but otherwise remained consistently on the defensive end of play.

Jaisa Loch recorded three stops midway through the first half before Eagle Anna Gurney found a gap from 10 yards to put Emory on the board. She was assisted by Bahar Ulusan on the play.

The second period flowed in much the same pattern with the Eagles notching three shots and two corner kicks through the first 8:36 of play. Meredith's Kirstie King launched one at the box after a foul on EU, but the shot floated just above the crossbar.

On the other end of the field, Emory's Melinda Altamore punched the ball in on a header with a pass from Kaitlyn Dorka at 64:16. EU's Nikki Batt closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute with a long drive from the left wing that found the far corner of the net for the win.

Loch recorded 17 saves in her first loss on the season, and starting goalie Haley Pratt earned her third win playing 81:23 for EU. Danielle Staffin stepped in the goal late in the second half to finish out the match.

Meredith travels the next two weeks, playing first at Virginia Wesleyan Saturday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. Wednesday the 20th, the Angels head to Washington & Lee for a midweek contest before returning to the Angels Den September 23 for a weekend doubleheader to open the USA South schedule.
