CARY, N.C. -- The Meredith College soccer team handled the host William Peace Pacers in Wednesday night's USA South Conference pairing at WakeMed Soccer Park. Senior Cassie Padilla and rookie Kelsey Russell scored Meredith's goals for the win.
The win leaves the Angels as one of two East Division teams who remain undefeated in early league play. Salem College leads the division with a 3-0 conference record, and the two teams meet on the Meredith turf Saturday in a battle for the lead.
Padilla's game winning goal came in the 19th minute of tonight's match, as she recovered a WPU deflection for the score. Late in regulation, Russell stamped the win with her second collegiate goal, unassisted.
The Avenging Angels maintained control of the match throughout the 90 minutes recording 38 shots to just one for the Pacers. Fourteen Angels made an attempt with Molly Thomas leading the pack with eight. Kayla Boudreau tallied six shots, and Hannah Elvington posted five.
WPU's Alyssa Gasperini recorded the hosts only shot on goal, but Meredith keeper Jaisa Loch stopped the attempt for her sixth shutout on the season. Jessika Schutte recorded the loss for William Peace with 13 saves.
