RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sophomore Kayla Boudreau scored from 15 yards out on a pass from Cassie Padilla to lead Meredith College soccer to a 1-0 victory over the visiting N.C. Wesleyan Bishops. The Avenging Angels moved into a tie with Salem for first place in the USA South's East Division with the win.
With the USA South Tournament fast approaching every match is critical to final standings with the tension on the field in tonight's contest a clear result of the pressure. Both teams played aggressive on every pass, and the officials whistled for 33 fouls during the 90 minutes of play.
Boudreau's first season goal sent the Avenging Angels into the locker room at the half with a lead.Perhaps Wesleyan's best chance to even the score came in the 79th minute as Jaisa Loch stopped a shot from Maggie Rankin. Bishop Sarah Cook recovered the deflection and sent her attempt just high of the crossbar.
Loch recorded eight saves in her 10th win on the season in goal for Meredith, and Ashley Major tallied seven stops for the Bishops.
The Avenging Angels host Pfeiffer University tomorrow night in a 6 p.m. match-up. Head Coach Paul Smith and his staff will celebrate the senior class just prior to kickoff.
