FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Meredith College women's tennis team was picked to finish second in in the USA South Conference preseason coaches poll as announced Wednesday from the league office.
The Methodist University Monarchs received 8 of 12 first-place votes designating MU as the preseason favorite. Last spring, Methodist, Meredith and Christopher Newport University completed 2012 as tri-regular season league champions, and the Monarchs claimed the conference tournament title in April.
Meredith finished second in the balloting with 113 points and three first-place votes while Christopher Newport followed in third with 97 points and the final first-place vote. N.C. Wesleyan secured fourth place with 93 points while Piedmont rounded out the top-half of the poll in fifth with 69 points.
LaGrange College, Maryville College and Piedmont College will compete for the first time this spring as new full-members of the conference. All three institutions competed last year in the Great South Athletic Conference.
Meredith hosts Barton College February 6 in the season opener.
