Falcons Edge Past Meredith, 5-4

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College (0-2) tennis team lost a tough 5-4 battle in today's non-conference pairing with Division II Pfeiffer University (2-3).

Junior Mary Lawrence Newton and rookie Taylor Brennan gave the Avenging Angels their only doubles point at no. 3 when Falcons Haefele/Oliver slipped past Betty Edwards and Mollie Musgrave at the no. 2 spot.

Edwards swept Oliver 6-1, 6-3 at no. 4 singles for an early finish in time to watch the battles of the day. Down one set at the no. 6 spot, Brennan fought back to tie the match with a 7-6 set-two score. She went on to win the super ball tiebreaker 11-9 for the win.

Puja Patel battled back in her no. 1 singles pairing versus Taylor Lindsey to claim the opening set 7-6. She carried the momentum into the second but lost her footing and Lindsey slipped in for a 7-6 finish to tie the match. Patel claimed the tiebreaker 10-8 to record the win.

Meredith remains at home for a non-league match with the Roanoke Maroons Saturday, February 16. Doubles play is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
