Tennis Opens Spring Break Week in Florida with 5-4 Win Over Wartburg

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Meredith Avenging Angels claimed a 5-4 win over NCAA Division III Wartburg College of Waverly, Iowa, Monday in Orlando, Florida. Today marked the first of four matches during the spring break trip for Meredith.

The Avenging Angels improved to 2-2 on the season, and the Knights entered today's action 9-4 overall.

Meredith opened the match with just one doubles win. Puja Patel and Caroline Hunt defeated Claire Evans and Melissa Davis 8-3 at the no. 1 spot. Betty Edwards and Mollie Musgrave fell 6-5 at no. 2 and freshmen pair Becky O'Brien and Mack Thompson lost 8-5.

Patel secured a 6-4, 6-2 win in the top singles flight to tie the match 2-2, and partner Hunt edged past Davis 7-6, 7-5 to take a one point lead.

Edwards and rookie Taylor Brennan posted wins at no. 4 and no. 5, respectively, to seal the non-conference win for the Avenging Angels. Hallie Corbett lost a tough battle 7-5, 7-6 at the no. 6 spot in her first career match, and Mary Lawrence Newton finished with a 6-4, 6-4 loss at no. 3.

Meredith faces the NCAA Division II Grand Valley State University Lakers at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning and ends the day versus Division III Coe College with doubles slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. in Orlando.
