Tennis Claims 5-4 Win Over Simpson

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Meredith Avenging Angels (3-4) tennis squad closed out a spring break trip in Orlando, Florida, with a 5-4 win over Simpson College (8-8) of Indianola, Iowa. In Tuesday's pairings, the team dropped a pair of matches to a strong Grand Valley State University and Coe College to complete the week's competition.

Meredith's Betty Edwards and Mollie Musgrave claimed the lone doubles win at no. 2 with an 8-4 win over Simpson's Lindsay Nash/Kelli Ehrhardt Thursday.

Down 2-1 after the first round, Caroline Hunt moved up the ranks to no. 1 and battled for a 6-5, 6-4 win over Tiffany Bost. Doubles partner Mary Lawrence Newton faced off for a 6-3, 6-2 win at no. 2, and Edwards rounded out the top three with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nash.

Rookie Taylor Brennan claimed the final singles flight for Meredith at no. 5 to complete the Avenging Angels win.

In Tuesday's competition with Michigan's Grand Valley State, Puja Patel scored the solo point for Meredith versus the tough Division II team with a tiebreaker win over Claire Cooper. Edwards/Musgrave posted an 8-6 win over Poynter/Birky in the 8-1 loss to Iowa's Coe College in the nightcap.

The Avenging Angels travel next to Mary Baldwin College to open the USA South season Saturday, March 16. Meredith will pick up a non-league match with Southern Virginia the same afternoon.
