Track & Field Adds Javelin to Competition Events; Thomas Wins 400m at Jopson

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Rookie Essence Thomas won the 400m sprint in Bridgewater's Doc Jopson Invite Saturday, and the Meredith College track & field team competed in the women's javelin for the first time in the program's two-year history. Demonica Stanley finished second her first time out in the event.

Thomas finished the 400m in a time of 1:00.87 to earn her victory, and Stanley threw the javelin 29.10m, just 0.8m behind the winner.

Amy Rhoney and Taylor Wilson also tossed the javelin today for the first time; Rhoney with a mark of 19.30m and Wilson 10.40m.

Macy Brinson and Megan Evans raced the 5000m run for the first time in their Meredith careers and finished at a pace of 21:23.54 and 23:02.80, respectively. Kiara Glover finished seventh in the 800m run with a time of 2:42.23.

In the discus Amy Rhoney threw for 9.32m to finish 11th, and Stanley neared her personal best with 9.02m. Rhoney's throw in the shot put was a second-best performance on the season for 9.32m.

The Avenging Angels travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, next weekend for the Liberty Collegiate Invitational before closing out the season at the Atlantic Coast Championship in Durham April 20.
