RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith College Head Volleyball Coach Fiona Barkley announced the 2013 slate Monday. Barkley will lead the Avenging Angels in her seventh season this August and looks for a return to Martinsville for the USA South Conference tournament in November.
Meredith opens the season versus Rowan University at the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational August 30. The New Jersey Profs completed the 2012 season 22-9 overall and lost in the semifinal round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament.
Game-two in Norfolk, Virginia, pairs the Avenging Angels with the University of Mary Washington. The Eagles closed out the 2012 season with a five-game winning streak that ended with a loss to Salisbury in the Captial Athletic Conference semifinals. New Head Coach Matt Troy began his tenure with UMW in December.
Saturday, August 31, Meredith meets the tournament host Marlins before capping off the invitational with the Randolph WildCats.
Emory & Henry travels to Raleigh for MC's home opener Wednesday, September 4. Meredith won the last three meetings with the Wasps, who ended the 2012 season 9-23 overall.
The Avenging Angels travel to Lexington, Virginia, September 6 for a two-day event at Washington & Lee. Meredith pairs with Southern Virginia and the Generals Friday evening, and opens Saturday with the Otterbein Cardinals. MC caps off the weekend meeting the Christopher Newport Captains in a non-conference match, as CNU departs the USA South with the close of the 2012-2013 year.
St. Andrews and Salem round out the non-conference competition for Meredith September 12. The SAU Knights defeated the Avenging Angels when the teams last met in 2009, and Meredith leads the Spirits 3-0 during the last six seasons.
September 18 opens Meredith's conference season beginning first with the Methodist Monarchs in Fayetteville.
With the changing landscape of the USA South, the Avenging Angels will host one of five quad-events during the regular season and travel to Piedmont mid-October for a tri-match with Methodist.
The 2013 rotation includes trips to familiar Ferrum, Methodist and Mary Baldwin and adds new-member Huntingdon College to the series during Meredith's autumn recess.
The Avenging Angels host Greensboro and Mary Baldwin during week-two of the conference season, and Methodist plays both visitors while in Raleigh as well.
Cross-town rival William Peace travels first to Weatherspoon for match-one of the 2013 series October 2, and Meredith completes the round at Peace during the final week of the regular season.
The Avenging Angels host Averett University October 16 for the program's Dig Pink event, and senior night is slated for the 23rd with the Wesleyan Bishops.
For the second consecutive year, the USA South will host the volleyball championships in Martinsville, Virginia, as part the 2013 Fall Sports Festival. Beginning Friday, November 8, with the quarterfinals, all tournament matches will be played in Stone Hall on the campus of Patrick Henry Community College.
In conjunction with the volleyball tournament, the men's and women's soccer semifinal and championship rounds will be held at Martinsville's Smith River Sports Complex for the fifth consecutive year.
