Volleyball Opens Fall Break with 3-0 Win Over Monarchs

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Wednesday night before Meredith College's fall recess, the Avenging Angels volleyball team downed the visiting Methodist Monarchs 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-23) to remain perfect in the USA South and tied for first with Averett in East Division standings. Karlie Long led the Angels with 12 kills, and Haley Reeg notched 10, hitting .667 on the night.

In the first set the Angels gave away five points on service errors and struggled to find the gap in MU's defense.

After a sluggish start, MCVB turned up the heat in the second stanza to finish off the Monarchs 25-11. Meredith's tenacious attackers pressured Methodist and finally started to pull the Angels away on .440 hitting compared to -.037 for the visitors.

Methodist put up a battle in the third to hold a 9-6 lead early in the frame. A pair of service missteps for MU helped the Angels remain close, and Reeg tied the set at 10 on a blast from the middle. She landed three more winners to give the Angels a 16-14 advantage.

But Methodist remained in the hunt and evened the score once more at 20 to force Head Meredith Coach Fiona Barkley to call for a break in the action.

Neither team would win their own point until Alex Hafliger finally put down a kill from the middle to give MCVB a one point lead at 23-22. After a Methodist timeout Hafliger returned to the court for another winner for match-point. Caroline Corey would put the Monarchs away on the final point with Hannah Blaylock earning her match-high 37th assist on the night.

Keegan Lynch led the Angels with 11 digs, and Emery McGee recorded 8 in the win.

MU's Cassidy Hayes led the Monarch offense with 11 kills, and rookie libero Annabelle Ronelli posted  a match-high 12 digs.

Meredith will travel to Staunton, Virginia Friday to face off with Mary Baldwin at 5 p.m. before enjoying a much deserved weekend off during the College's fall break. Follow the action live HERE.
