ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball team collected their third USA South win early this season with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-12) sweep over N.C. Wesleyan. Caroline Corey dominated the Angels offense hitting .333 on the night with 16 kills in 36 attempts.
The host N.C. Wesleyan Bishops put up a fight through the first set and one half, until a 7-0 MCVB run drove the Angels towards a sweep. With rookie Lauren Phillips on the service line, Hafliger opened with a kill off a Hannah Blaylock assist, and two more from Caroline Corey unsettled the Bishops. NCW continued to struggle as Meredith cruised to a 2-0 set advantage.
Phillips' steady hand opened the third set with an ace, and Corey found a gap for another kill. Haley Reeg and Blaylock stuffed a Bishop attempt, but an Angel misstep returned the ball to the host at 4-2.
Corey and Reeg each landed a winner, as MCVB continued to pressure the Bishops. The teams exchanged points until Reeg and Blaylock extended Meredith's lead to eight. Down the stretch Corey recorded back-to-back service winners en route to the finish.
Hafliger recorded eight kills in 17 attempts with a pair of blocks, and Reeg notched five kills and two block assists. Blaylock led all with 31 assists, and Samantha Smith led MCVB with 18 digs on the night.
Meredith travels to Danville, Virginia, Saturday for a conference tri-match with the 2016 East Division Champion Averett Cougars and new division member Salem. MCVB opens the play day at 11 with Averett. Follow the live action HERE.
