RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be sponsored by two new athletics staff members beginning fall 2017 in Head Softball Coach Kim Scavone and Assistant Cross Country/Track & Field Coach Gene Meade. The two look forward to offering fresh perspective to the Avenging Angels in an effort to re-energize the NCAA-driven organization.
Fiona Barkley previously held the sponsorship position and stepped aside as she begins her new, NCAA grant-sponsored role as assistant athletic director for advancement and external relations this year.
Student-athletes have a voice in the NCAA through advisory committees at the campus, conference, and national level. Each committee is made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and offer input on the rules, regulations, and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on campus. The SAAC also holds primary responsibility for maintaining and coordinating the division's nationwide partnership with Special Olympics.
Meredith's SAAC includes two-to-three representatives from each of the college's eight sports, in addition to a slate of officers charged with leadership of the organization. Scavone and Meade serve as mentors offering guidance and assistance to help the student-athletes maintain focus and drive towards fulfilling service initiatives and other annual goals established by the committee.
