RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College athletics released the fall sport schedules Monday afternoon with the 2018 season fast approaching. The cross country, soccer, and volleyball Avenging Angels kick off the season on the road Friday, Aug. 31.
Cross country opens at the 4,000m Elon Invitational again this year, a largely Division I pool. The team will compete close to home September 14 at the 5K Adidas Cross Country Challenge located at nearby WakeMed Park. One week later the Angels begin a series of 6K competitions to prepare for the USA South Championship meet scheduled at Maryville College October 26. The Berry Vikings will once again host the NCAA Regional meet mid-November, and Meredith will compete in a preview invitational just prior to the conference finals to prepare.
The soccer team travels to the University of the South to face off with the host Sewanee Tigers and Berry College in an opening weekend invitational. The Stockton University Ospreys of Galloway, New Jersey, will join Guilford College and USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan for the Meredith College Classic September 8 and 9. The Bishops will host Stockton in Rocky Mount Friday afternoon and travel to Raleigh the following day to play Guilford. All other games will be played on the Meredith turf during the two-day event.
Meredith travels to Roanoke College, the University of Mary Washington, and Southern Virginia in non-conference action in September and hosts the Ferrum Panthers and Emory and Henry to conclude the non-league schedule. USA South Conference action begins September 30 at Salem with round one tournament action slated for Wednesday, Oct. 24.
The volleyball Avenging Angels open the 2018 campaign at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania for a two-day, four-match event. Starting with the Lancaster Bible College Chargers and the McDaniel Green Terror Friday evening, Meredith wraps up the tournament Saturday versus Penn State-Harrisburg and the host Bullets Saturday afternoon.
Meredith opens at home September 5 versus the Roanoke Maroons before traveling the following weekend to Brevard for another invitational. The Angels open the busy USA South schedule versus rival Averett University in Virginia September 19 and will play hard to set a winning pace towards the conference tournament, slated to open October 30.
