FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - This year marks the 50th Anniversary for the USA South Athletic Conference. As part of an ongoing celebration, the conference will seasonally announce the anniversary team for each of the USA South's sponsored sports. Meredith congratulates the four Avenging Angels selected to the 50th Anniversary Women's Softball Team.
Each current member institution was given the opportunity to submit names of student-athletes who have competed within the Conference, completed their athletic eligibility and excelled not only on their campuses but in the Conference as a whole.
The sport of softball began in the conference in a slow-pitch format with its first championships awarded in 1982 and transitioned into fast-pitch three years later. It is not unusual for multiple USA South teams to receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament. At least two Conference teams have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in six of the last seven seasons. Recently, the conference tournament has been very competitive as a different team has earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for four consecutive years.
Below are the four Avenging Angels named to the USA South 50th Anniversary Women's Softball Team, including a brief summary of credits accumulated during their career at Meredith since joining the conference.
Emily Cook (two-time All-Conference, 2011 All Tournament selection, 2011 All-Academic, 2010 team MVP, top-five all-time at Meredith in batting average, slugging percentage, doubles, home runs, RBI, and stolen bases)
Kristin Morris (2010 All-Conference first team, 2010 team MVP, leads Meredith all-time with .469 batting average, .514 on-base percentage, five triples, and 23 stolen bases)
