RALEIGH, N.C. - Former USA South foe Christopher Newport University, ranked 22 nationally in the NCAA Division III poll, swept the Meredith Avenging Angel softball team in Wednesday's non-conference action. The Captains claimed game one with a score of 3-0 and capped off the afternoon 7-1 for the sweep.
In the bottom of the first inning, Meredith's Katlyn Johnson walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice from Courtney Saunders. Johnson moved to third on a single from Ashley Green, but the Avenging Angels left the runners on base thanks to a double play on the next at-bat.
Meredith would get no closer than second base the rest of the game.
After a solo home run in the second inning, the Captains scored two more runs in the top of the fourth frame to seal the win.
Krista Lewis recorded her fourth win with three base-on-balls and as many strikeouts, while Avenging Angel Amanda Beirne took her first loss on the day allowing three runs with one walk and five strikeouts.
Meredith loaded the bases in the bottom of the first frame to rally in game two. Leah Friedman scored on a wild pitch to give the Avenging Angels their only run on the day.
CNU scored four runs on three hits and a Meredith error in the top of the fourth frame to take the lead. The Avenging Angel defense failed to recover, and the Captains went on to claim the sweep.
Christopher Newport's Hanah Marshall posted her second win on the season, and Berine took her second hit on the day to fall to 1-5 on the season.
The Avenging Angels host USA South newcomer Covenant College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday, March 7, to kick off the spring break week. Maryville travels to Raleigh for a two-game event Saturday at 1 p.m. before Meredith heads to Florida.
