RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College softball team shutout the Maryville Scots with a 2-0 game one clinic from veteran pitcher Amanda Beirne. The Avenging Angels capped off the doubleheader with a 9-0 victory, sweetened with a two-RBI triple from Amanda White to end the game in six innings.
Beirne struckout 15-of-26 batters faced to claim her fourth win on the season in game one. Amanda White drilled a two-RBI homer to seal the deal in the bottom of the sixth inning. She scored Ashley Green on the play.
In game two Meredith opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a two-run double from Green. Katlyn Johnson and Kayla Lane scored on the play. White sent Green home on the next at-bat with her own double.
Johnson advanced to first in the bottom of the fourth on her second single of the day, and Green crushed a home run to send her home for a five-run lead.
White singled through the leftside and Courtney Saunders sent her home with a left center double. Whitney Williams sailed one up the center to send home Saunders to score the fourth run of the inning.
The Meredith defense handled the Scots in three batters holding on to a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
Johnson advanced on a base-on-balls, and a Maryville miscue put Leah Friedman on first. Green moved both runners around, and White's triple to right finished the game early.
Beirne struckout two in her second shutout on the day. Maryville's Lexie Randolph took the loss for the Scots.
The Avenging Angels travel to central Florida for a six-game spring break event at the Dot Richardson Spring Games. Meredith returns to their home field next Saturday, March 15, for a USA South doubleheader with Averett.
