RALEIGH, N.C. - Cross-town rivals Meredith College and William Peace shared the wins in Sunday's USA South doubleheader. The Pacers took game one, 3-2, with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth, and the Avenging Angels finished off the night cap, 4-2, on a two-RBI double from Whitney Williams.
In the even match-up of Sunday's opener, four-of-five runs rounded the bases with a home run. WPU opened the scoring in the bottom of the second frame with a solo homer, and Meredith's Ashley Green followed in the sixth with the seventh dinger of her career to force the game to extra innings.
Alyssa D'Arco was placed on second in the top of the eighth, and Macy Allen moved her to third on a sacrifice bunt. Leah Friedman advanced on an error to score D'Arco for a one-run Meredith lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
Pacer Lindsey Wiggins ended the game early with her two-run, walk-off homer.
Fueled by the loss in game one, the Avenging Angels jumped out to a quick two-run lead in the second on a pair of sacrifice flies from Williams and Green.
Peace evened the tally in the bottom of the third thanks in part to an Angel error.
Williams double in the top of six, scoring Allen and Lorri Cole, to secure the win for the split.
Amanda Beirne pitched two complete games striking out eight on the day.
The Avenging Angels host the Covenant Scots in Thursday's makeup date. Undefeated league leader Piedmont travels to Raleigh Saturday, and Meredith heads North for a USA South doubleheader at Ferrum Sunday to round out a tough conference week.
