RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College softball Angels opened at home Thursday with a pair of wins over local rival Shaw University. Taylor Jackson recorded a three-hitter shutout with a 4-0 win in game one in her 37th career win, and Myah Morse notched an 8-0, six-inning one-hitter in the nightcap.
Erica Occena led the offense with a bunt single in the second, and followed by a RBI-single looped into center field to score Julia Allsbrook in the fourth. Allsbrook advanced on a two-out double to left center.
Sarah Watson and Brittany Bucklin each advanced on a single in the first, and Maria Annunziata drove in Kelsey Mabe, who led off with her first of two walks. Katie Kepley scored Annunziata to close out the frame. Mabe's RBI came in the second as she drove in Occena with two outs on the board to extend Meredith's lead to three.
Jackson tallied a dozen strikeouts with one walk in her 25 batters faced, and Amanda Ortiz earned three of Meredith's four runs in her second loss on the season.
The Avenging Angels recorded 10 hits to finish off the Bears early in game two. Mabe tallied three hits and scored on each one, and Occena followed suit with two runs in a pair of hits. Bucklin scored her first of two-RBI in the first and her second on a sac-fly in the fourth. Watson scored two-RBI on a single through the middle in the third, and rookie Alyssa Drake walked in Watson for her first career RBI on the next at-bat.
Morse struck out two of the 21 batters she faced and walked three for her first win on the season and eighth career. The Bears Sheniqua Fahie pitched two and one-third innings for the loss, and Frances Perry entered in relief in the third.
Meredith remains at home for back-to-back non-conference doubleheaders this weekend beginning with the Emory & Henry Wasps Saturday at Noon. THe McDaniel Green Terror close our their trip to Raleigh with the Angels Sunday afternoon.
