STAUNTON, Va. -- Today's doubleheader sweep at Mary Baldwin University placed the Meredith College softball Angels at the top of the East Division alongside Salem. Tomorrow's results across the conference will determine USA South Tournament seeding and hosting privileges for next weekend's divisional playoffs.
The top-three seeds in each division will host four, five, and six in a best-of-three series, and the Avenging Angels will battle for that advantage tomorrow at Ferrum. Games versus the host Panthers are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
The Avenging Angels tallied 18 hits in each game today with a two-out, three-RBI dinger from Brittany Bucklin in game one, followed by a two-RBI homer from Rachel Peel in the second. Bucklin's five hits on the day, including a four-of-four outing in game one, edged her into second place all-time at Meredith with 155 career hits.
Taylor Jackson racked up six strikeouts in her 11th season win to enter into the top-five in both categories in USA South rankings. Myah Morse struck out three Baldwin batters in her win, and Payton Aldridge recorded one in her two innings pitched in relief.
Each of the Avenging Angel batters recorded at least one hit, with extra bases from Kelsey Mabe, Charley Cox, Maria Annunziata, Erica Occena, and Bucklin. Six Angels were credited with runs batted in, including sacrifce flies from Annunziata, Eran Artigues, and Occena. Occena notched her sixth career triple in the third inning and now sits in third place all-time at Meredith.
